Web Development

Chip's website uses a single-page "tapestry style" layout to display content. It was a goal to create a user experience that would offer easy navigation while allowing folks to connect to Chip's points at their own speed. In addition, the single-page design presents all of the site's content on one page eliminating the need to wait for other pages to load. Lastly, the site has been developed with broad accessibility in-mind from any web browser to help support the goals of the candidate. What's in a name when it comes to political advertising? In this case, an apple. After learning about Chip Curry (the candidate) and thinking about how to introduce him visually to the public, we found ourselves in search of an idea that would differentiate him from the competition and the plethora of posted political signs. What we came up with was an american icon that supports most of Chip's platform in one way or another (see "What's up with The Apple?") The result, a device that makes Chip's sign memorable and, in general, makes people smile.

Lutz Vorderwülbecke, an architectural and advertising photographer in the UK, engaged Pica to design and build a simple, custom website that would allow him to manage the site himself without additional support services from us. The result, a content-managed, responsive website design featuring a one-page, scrollable, tapestry style layout to showcase all of his images organized by gallery. As a responsive design, the website can grow and contract as needed and adapts to the size of the user's browser window or mobile device. Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors, an established, award-winning print and online magazine, partnered with us to develop advertising concepts for this year's 10th Annual Show. Every August on the Rockland waterfront, the Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show brings together the finest boats, marine goods, furniture, art, and home ware exhibitors with more than 12,000 attendees. This live version of the magazine is the state’s only in-water boat show. Our challenge: to craft messaging that would celebrate the range of show offerings and attract newcomers. The result: a campaign that focuses on the virtual parade of attractions at the show. To learn more about the show visit: maineboats.com

Pica designed the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce Guide for 8 years, providing design, layout and project management for the book each year. In 2011, the Chamber (representing over 200 businesses) awarded Pica Design + Marketing the full contract for editorial development, ad sales, graphic design, layout, and project management for the 68-page magazine, Belfast The Bay and Beyond. The Magazine exceeded expectations and has raised the standard for the publication. In 2013, Pica will improve associated online content and create new experiences for the Magazine.

Unity College staff came to Pica late last year to create a seal--an extension of their brand communications that would connect to the existing College brand. To begin, the dean of enrollment and marketing surveyed the community regarding preferences for design elements and key words. We created six initial designs from that content and presented them for review and comment. The initial designs were then narrowed down to one selection featuring key elements (sun, tree, landscape, earth and the yin-yang symbol) and key words. We refined the selection with community input and built out graphic standards for the final seal, including color and environment variations. The result is a contemporary graphic that represents the sum and substance of Unity College.

Biophilia means 'love of life or living systems'. Our client's farm has grown around this theme; resources are used, recycled, and cared for holistically, without much waste. Biophilia farm offers breeding, sheering, weaving and felting and their fiber products are exceptionally high quality. Our first discussions centered around a memorable experience with the fiber products made at the farm. Through multiple rounds of design and feedback, we developed a mark that our client felt communicated the interconnectedness of her farming methodologies and farm products.
